My brother and I want to get world of warcraft.
I first brought up the subject when I realised that I had gotten bored of all the games I normally play on PC(games such as runescape, free realms, spore and guild wars).

We're intending to get the Battle Chest which has the base game, the burning crusade expansion, and a manual for each game. As well as the wrath of the lich king expansion. We asked my mum and she says she'll think about it.

My point is that world of warcraft seems great, but I wan't to know what other people think about it.

Most of the opinions you'll get here are from people who have already judged WoW without playing it at all. There are few people on this forum that have. I can point you their direction if you'd like.

I've played a bit of it, and I think it's quite... boring, really. Wierd thing is I found Perfect World far more fun.

Because I feel like knowing other peoples opinions of the game, people who play guild wars. I'd like to see what the runescapians feel about WoW, although the "Overly obsessed runescape nerd" youtube video series gives me an idea, lol!

Maybe so, but world of warcraft is high up in the ranks and may be/could become the greatest mmo/mmoprg(whatever)ever.
I've seen more expensive games, I think there was one that had a £14/£15 per month subscription, might of been Everquest.

WoW can only be enjoyable if you have 24 other not terrible people with the same schedule as you, and those 24 people make up the perfect raid composition for every encounter. Otherwise enjoy spending the majority of your monthly fee bored out of your mind or wasted gold on frequent wipes because the overly simplistic strategy for each boss will cause key members to frequently die.

Also, play either a Paladin or a Druid and never ever role a class that can only DPS.

It may be why I find it boring, it may be why the game isn't my cup of tea - games are like a story, you pick it up, read it and if it doesn't seem interesting you put it down.

It's a free WoW clone, really, with limitations on character customisability. I have no idea why, but that game got me dragged in unlike WoW when they were pretty much the same.

Can the game still be played if you're just playing on your own?

Can you install the game on 2 computers and be logged on at the same time?

So me and my brother can play the game under the same account and fight eachother?

I don't understand raids or much of anything about WoW yet.

I'm gonna be a night elf druid to start, because transforming into different creatures seems great!

I tried wow for a few hours, and quickly saw where it was going.
I also played perfect world, a bit longer, but quit after 2 weeks after I new the road it was taking.
Probably from playing runescape/ff11 quite a bit, but I don't find killing monster 1 by 1 alone for a few hours and grinding level alone.....interesting. Not my cup of tea, but if it floats your boat. go for it.

About WoW: I enjoyed it because I played it with people I knew and they made low level characters with me. Instances were fun though being a priest sucked when I wanted to level by myself. 15/month isn't worth it to me though. I afk on it way too much or just use it to chat. :\

Raids are either 10 or 25 man groups. Basically you'll spend the majority of the time tanknspanking down trash mobs, a lot of time waiting for people to get back from AFKs and DCs, more time going over the strategy for each boss, time dividing up loot then hearing people bitch about who got the loot, and of course the mandatory wipes from people who say they know the strategy then fail when it comes time to fight.

Boss fights last about 5 minutes each, so in a typical raid night that lasts a few hours you'll spend maybe 30 minutes actually enjoying yourself.

Good, the game won't be a major disappointment when you hit 80 and want to group since you can fill all three roles.

Damage per second, basically some classes are only capable of dealing damage, others are capable of healing or damage, some can tank or deal damage, and others (Druid and Paladin) can do all three.

Played for around 6 months. Three back when it first came out and three more not long after WotLK.

You NEED to find friends. Not just one or two. A whole freakin' guild thats on when you're on. Otherwise you'll constantly find yourself missing out on most of the interesting content, as well as much of the better/best gear.

Also, you may want to wait for their newest expansion. The old world and TBC are dead. Nobody plays them at all. There are many instances where you are the only person in a zone. With two new races, many people will probably be starting new characters, which would probably be the best time to start your own, at least you'll find other people to group with that way.

My opinion?

I started playing a little after release as i had played WC3 and WC2 before that.
In the beginning it was a great game, but then it started to become mainstream and THEN BC came out, which almost ruined it for me...at least i could play a BE lol.
Then i quit after seeing the pointlessness of hitting 70 compared to hitting 60 before BC was released. I came back for a month or so when WoTLK was released, and it "fixed" a few things about it, but there was still that apparent pointlessness of hitting 80 like hitting 70 in BC....even so i have my 80 mage, but i don't see the point in doing anything if there going to raise the level cap AGAIN and make all those hours you spent getting t8 or t9 worthless.

Overall, my opinion is that WoW was at its best before any on the expansions came about and before it became extremly mainstream.

It has lots of features I would have liked to see implemented in gw. Other than that it got boring quicktime. Also not a fan of the graphic style.
